The CachyOS development team has released a new ISO snapshot, enhancing support for both AMD and NVIDIA graphics users. This update incorporates the latest KDE Plasma 6.2.3 desktop environment and operates on the Linux kernel version 6.11.7.
Key improvements include the backporting of the THP Shrinker from Linux kernel 6.13 to optimize memory usage when transparent_hugepages is always active. Additionally, the update introduces the AMD Cache Optimizer, aimed at improving gaming experiences, and It backports performance fixes specifically for Strix Point laptops, while also enhancing compatibility with the RDNA3 family of AMD GPUs.
For NVIDIA users, this release resolves issues with DLSS Frame Generation, ensuring it functions correctly and automatically disables the GSP (GPU System Processor) firmware when shifting to the proprietary NVIDIA graphics driver. This change is important as many users revert to closed-source modules when facing problems with the GSP Firmware. The nvidia-powerd service is now enabled by default on supported laptop graphics cards.
CachyOS comes with a well-customized KDE Plasma desktop environment, featuring a pleasing theme and various enhancements. The new ISO adds the kdeplasma-addons package, which enriches the Plasma desktop experience. This update also includes warnings for users trying to install the CachyOS Handheld Edition on standard PCs, along with improved support for the Rog Ally X gaming handheld.
Using the popular Calamares universal installer, the CachyOS installation process has also seen improvements, particularly in partitioning options that now include a dedicated Swap partition. The "3-way" partitioning for rEFInd has been reverted.
Lastly, the latest ISO release features a script that checks if users are utilizing the most recent version for installation. This ensures they are not operating with outdated packages and resolves timing issues for displays featuring 5120×1440 resolution at 240Hz.
CachyOS users can simply update their existing installations by executing the sudo pacman -Syu
command in a terminal or via the Plasma Discover graphical package manager. The newest CachyOS release can be downloaded from the official website.
