Today marks the release of Ardour 8.10, another hot-fix update in the Ardour 8.x series. This potent, free, open-source, cross-platform digital audio workstation (DAW) software addresses several significant issues.
Hot on the heels of Ardour 8.9, this update aims to resolve various performance problems related to the scheduling of disk input/output threads, the importing of Standard MIDI Files (SMF) through drag and drop which utilizes the file name, and the content slipping of regions for correctly updating playback buffers.
In addition to remedying these newly identified critical issues reported by users in earlier Ardour versions, the 8.10 update introduces a new MIDI binding map dedicated to the M-AUDIO Axiom MK II controller, includes a new Lua script designed to duplicate regions on the grid, and refreshes all non-default color themes.
It seems that Ardour 8.10 might be the final update in the Ardour 8.x series unless further significant bugs are discovered. Meanwhile, the development team is diligently focusing on the next major release, Ardour 9.0, which is currently open for public testing from the project’s Git repository.
“This is intended to be the last release of the 8.x series. Our git repository is now at 9.0-pre0, and should no longer be considered stable or usable for production work now that it contains what was the ‘pianorule’ branch. Over the next few months, we will be working hard to get this into shape for a 9.0 release with several notable new features,” said developer Paul Davis.
Ardour 8.10 is available for download from the official website as a source tarball that you will have to compile on your GNU/Linux distribution following these instructions. If that’s not your cup of tea, you can always install Ardour from your distro’s stable repositories or as a Flatpak app from Flathub.
