Deepin 23: Unveiling the Latest Official Release of the Linux Distribution

“We don’t see simple changes like tweaking a few apps, altering the interface language, changing the background, or rearranging apps as real updates to an operating system. We aim for each significant upgrade to bring a plethora of essential features that users truly need, along with innovative elements that extend the capabilities of a Linux desktop distribution, aspiring to match the power of commercial operating systems like Windows and macOS.”

— Liu Wenhuan, Founder of the deepin Community

On August 15, the globally recognized open-source community deepin hosted an online event under the theme “Born with AI, Remarkably Different.” They officially introduced the deepin 23 open-source operating system. This release included substantial enhancements such as the new DDE Vision, AI For OS, the “Linyaps” application ecosystem, and the “deepin IDE” integrated development environment.

“Over the last two decades, deepin has made substantial progress and innovation in the open-source operating system sector. We have been at the forefront of open-source developments in China and have been proactive in evolving desktop environments,” stated Zhang Lei, Chairman of the deepin Community, during his opening speech.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the community, deepin 23 was developed over three years and includes more than 200 enhancements and newly introduced features, spanning 9 versions, 51 internal tests, and 8 proprietary development tools. Each improvement is designed to refine and improve deepin 23.

With the implementation of the Linux 6.6 LTS kernel, deepin 23 allows for modular independence at each level of the OS, providing advanced development tools for the global open-source community.

The newly established beige-V23 repository supports independent selection and updating policies and has meticulously maintained over 8,000 key packages, greatly improving the system’s stability and security. Additionally, it offers improved support for cutting-edge hardware and architectures such as ARM64, RISC-V, and LoongArch64.

At the service layer, deepin developed the AM (Application Management) Framework, which not only facilitates more detailed control and unified scheduling on the resources and permissions at the application layer, but also leaves room for future expansion.

At the SDK layer, the DTK (Development ToolKit), developed based on Qt, caters to the need for high development efficiency by supporting “one-time development for multi-platforms and multi-architectures”. It has been successfully implemented across more than 10 Linux distributions. Within deepin 23, over 40 native applications including a browser, music player, and email client, have been created utilizing DTK.

At the desktop environment layer, the first globally recognized DDE led by a Chinese community has seen a major update. New additions like the taskbar, launcher, and highly personalized themes enhance system management and user interaction while maintaining the familiar user habits from deepin 20. The design of the display format is carefully tailored to ensure a consistent style and rhythm, facilitating smooth and seamless visual transitions during various operations.

At the application layer, deepin offers a broad native application development matrix:

“Zhang Lei emphasized the significant role of the deepin community in launching deepin 23, highlighting that much of the new functionalities and suggestions were contributed by community partners. He pointed out that collaborative efforts are essential for the growth and development of deepin, which continues to lead in the progression of open-source operating systems,” he said.

With strong community involvement and dedicated developer support, the deepin ecosystem is experiencing a period of accelerated growth. Notable CPU brands such as Intel, Loongson, Phytium, and XuanTie have recently confirmed their support for deepin 23. This marks it as the first open-source desktop operating system to be compatible with all leading general-purpose computing platforms including X86, ARM64, LoongArch64, and RISC-V, allowing users worldwide immediate access to deepin V23.

The deepin community, celebrating its 20-year anniversary, stands as one of the most substantial and dynamic open-source OS communities worldwide, garnering a large international user base. It boasts over 5.4 million members, with nearly 3 million from outside China. The community has been recognized with over 60 awards, both domestically and internationally. Its commercial offshoot, UnionTech UOS, has been installed on upwards of 6 million devices across China.

Adhering to a philosophy centered around user-needs and innovation, the community has set several benchmarks in the Linux landscape. These include being the first Chinese Linux community operating system, spearheading the first Linux desktop environment derived from a Chinese community, and launching the first Linux application store in China. With robust participation from numerous Chinese tech entities, the deepin community remains on the cutting edge of introducing pioneering innovations that drive forward the development of open-source technology in China.

Since UnionTech introduced UOS AI in 2023, its development and iterations have taken place through the upstream community edition of deepin. It’s evident that deepin V23 was fundamentally designed with AI functionalities at its core.

Marking a milestone as the first Chinese open-source OS with integrated large AI models, the renowned Linux Magazine abroad has commended deepin for its innovation: “deepin has effectively embedded AI within a desktop OS, positioning itself as a rival to Microsoft’s Copilot,” and “this could be just the start of deepin V23’s journey with AI.”

Since the integration of UOS AI within deepin, the technology has enabled support for over 20 natural language command functionalities for OS adjustments, more than 40 usage contexts, and compatibility across over 60 applications at the software level. In terms of hardware, it accommodates both national and international leading CPU and GPU chips. At the model level, it provides open interfaces that are compatible with all OpenAI interface standards, offering users the flexibility to tailor models to their specific requirements.

During the product launch, Tian Jun, who is the Senior R&D Manager of Open Source Technology at Intel, discussed Intel’s platform support and the most recent AI PC innovations compatible with deepin. The deepin Intel SIG group has been concentrating on comprehensive integration between Intel’s latest Meteor Lake processors and deepin. As a vital part of the Intel Ultra platform, this collaboration has led to substantial performance enhancements and expanded features for deepin.

“With the combined computing capabilities of CPUs, NPUs, and GPUs, deepin 23 is equipped to handle multiple practical AI applications, particularly excelling in local inference abilities. The fusion of the high throughput and graphics rendering capabilities of the GPU, the specialized low-power AI processing of the NPU, and the quick logical computations of the CPU contribute to the robust AI computing framework of deepin 23,” expressed Tian Jun.

The well-known office suite WPS has announced advancements in their collaborative AI-powered office solution. The personal edition of WPS Office For Linux, which integrates with deepin 23, will be accessible in the deepin App Store by the end of August. This iteration offers integration with AIGC within WPS products, and it facilitates the creation of a local personal knowledge base through interactions between UOS AI and WPS AI.

“Reflecting on the origins of modern computing, our goal has been to develop computers that comprehend human input; now, we are transitioning into a new phase. Analogous to how Moore’s Law catalyzed the informational revolution, the proliferation of deep neural networks is poised to spearhead the intelligence revolution,” stated Zhang Lei. Furthermore, deepin anticipates expediting the merger of AI technologies with its operating system, thus pioneering the innovative evolution of open-source systems.
