As of today, those of you who want to install Arch Linux have a new ISO image that incorporates the latest and greatest GNU/Linux technologies, including Linux kernel 6.10.
Arch Linux 2024.08.01 is here as Arch Linux’s ISO snapshot for August 2024 and the first to be powered by the latest Linux 6.10 kernel series, which should give you a boost when detecting hardware, especially on newer devices but also older ones where previous Arch Linux ISOs didn’t detect some of your components.
Of course, this kernel arrived several days ago in Arch Linux’s stable repositories for existing users. Arch Linux 2024.08.01 also includes all the updated packages released in July 2024, including the latest Archinstall 2.8.1 menu-based installer that brings some interesting changes for a better installation experience.
Highlights include experimental LVM (Logical Volume Manager) support, which will be available when choosing a default partitioning layout, updated Hyprland desktop profile with support for more apps, GUID type root partition as default, and new default root partition size from 20GB up to 50GB maximum.
On top of that, the Arch Linux installer now features a Finnish translation, the ability to use the current keyboard layout instead of the US layout by default, updated mkinitcpio.conf hooks for upstream consistency, the ability to skip devices that raise a DiskException
and log the exception message, and better mypy coverage.
Several core functions have been refactored in the installer as well, including suggest_single_disk_layout()
, format()
, and umount()
for a better and more reliable installation, and various bugs were addressed to improve things like the locale generator, handling of missing free spaces and deleted partitions, handling of unknown device/partition types, and unmounting of all partitions.
Arch Linux 2024.08.01 is available for download from the official website. As mentioned before, this new ISO release is here only for new installations as existing Arch Linux users can keep their systems up to date by running the sudo pacman -Syu
command in their favorite terminal emulator.
