Today, Parrot Security announced the release of Parrot OS 6.1, the newest stable version of their Debian-based distribution designed for security professionals involved in ethical hacking and penetration testing. This release features a range of updates to tools and functionality enhancements.
The release of Parrot OS 6.1 follows more than four months after Parrot OS 6.0, continuing to utilize the Linux 6.5 kernel series for its 64-bit (x86_64) generic images, and now includes Linux 6.6 LTS for the Raspberry Pi image. This latest update brings improved support for the newly released Raspberry Pi 5 board.
Enhancements within the Raspberry Pi image include new drivers that boost compatibility with external devices, along with upgraded Wi-Fi support specifically for the Raspberry Pi 400 computer.
In addition, the new version of Anonsurf—Parrot’s anonymous mode wrapper that directs connections through the Tor network—has been upgraded to version 4.2. This update brings increased stability and several fixes to the launcher script, enhancing anonymity and overall user experience.
This release reintroduces the parrot-updater
tool, which regularly reminds users to update their systems, securing their operations. It also patches the Nmap network scanner’s MS SQL scanning script, updates BIND9 for enhanced security, and implements the latest Chromium security upgrades.
The Parrot OS 6.1 update includes refreshed versions of numerous tools and programs, such as Burp Suite 2024.2.1.3, sqlmap 1.8.3, sslscan 2.1.3, zaproxy 2.14, NetExec 1.1.1, Metasploit 6.4.6, WoeUSB-ng 0.2.12, Volatility3 1.0.1, rizin 0.7.2, powershell-empire 5.9.5, instaloader 4.11, gdb-gef 2024.1, evil-winrm 3.5, Ruby 3.1, PipeWire 1.0.5, GRUB 2.12, Go 1.21, and LibreOffice 24.2. For more comprehensive details, review the release notes.
Parrot OS 6.1 is now available for download from the official site in various editions including Security, Home, and Hack The Box. These versions are intended for new installations, whereas existing users can update their system via the following terminal commands.
