As we anticipate the launch of the NVIDIA 555 with its groundbreaking explicit GPU synchronization feature and various other enhancements, NVIDIA has introduced a minor update to its NVIDIA 550 series today, specifically the NVIDIA 550.90.07, focusing on numerous bug resolutions.
The new NVIDIA 550.90.07 update brings notable enhancements, notably in how the nvidia-modprobe command can now better detect if kernel modules have already been loaded. This improvement is crucial as it fixes a previous issue where nvidia-persistenced was unable to set persistence mode on certain machines. This enhancement is applicable to Linux, FreeBSD, and Solaris operating systems.
Moreover, this update addresses a flaw that occasionally caused the X server to crash when graphics applications demanded single-buffered drawables while features like Vulkan sharpening were activated. It also resolves a race condition that could lead to crashes due to simultaneous Xid errors on multiple GPUs, and corrects an error that could trigger a kernel panic when failing to release a spinlock. These fixes are also relevant for Linux, FreeBSD, and Solaris systems.
Additionally, for all supported platforms, NVIDIA 550.90.07 rectifies an issue where extra X screens would inappropriately claim displays that should have been allocated to a previous X screen according to the X configuration in place.
For Linux users, this update resolves an issue causing possible data corruption when leveraging the GLX_EXT_buffer_age OpenGL extension on X.Org with PRIME render offloading. Additionally, it temporarily deactivates the GLX_EXT_buffer_age OpenGL extension on Xwayland as a precaution against a similar corruption issue.
In the case of FreeBSD, the NVIDIA 550.90.07 driver update repairs an issue that prevented successful installation if the directory for manual pages was absent. For Solaris, the update addresses a critical bug that could lead to a kernel panic on machines where NVIDIA GPUs do not drive the system console. Further details can be found in the release notes.
