The open-source web browser, Mozilla Firefox 126, is currently available for download, even before its official launch on May 14th. This article provides a deeper insight into the new features and enhancements present in this version.
Some noteworthy features of Firefox 126 are the addition of “Linux” to the User-Agent string of Firefox for Android, aiming to rectify certain website compatibility problems. It also renamed Firefox for Android’s “add-ons” settings to “Extensions” to maintain consistency with Firefox for desktop and addons.mozilla.org. Moreover, Firefox 126 has enabled AV1 hardware decode acceleration on macOS for M3 Macs.
Web developers can now use the new option in Firefox 126 to disable or enable the Developer Tools’ Split console feature. It also offers support for CSS Custom :state() and CustomStateSet, along with support for IDBFactory.databases for indexing of IndexedDB databases.
Apart from these features, Firefox 126 has implemented a static URL.parse() method which, unlike the URL constructor, returns null when the parsing fails. The browser has also switched on the CSS zoom property by default as a result of extensive web compatibility and standardization efforts in the CSSWG.
During beta testing, Firefox 126 shipped with a revamped Clear Data dialog promising a simpler and more unified way for clearing user data. However, it appears that this change didn’t make it in the final release. Another change that didn’t make it was a new “Show trending search suggestions” option in Search settings, which was also available during beta testing.
Mozilla Firefox 126 is available for download right now as a source tarball, DEB package, and binary packages for all supported platforms from Mozilla’s download server. You’ll have to wait until tomorrow, May 14th, if you want to update your existing installations via the OTA (Over-the-Air) update mechanism.
