The ongoing evolution of the Linux kernel sees Linux 6.8 as its upcoming major release milestone. Today, Linus Torvalds has announced the availability of the first Release Candidate (RC) for public testing.
With the launch of Linux 6.7, the two-week merge window for Linux kernel 6.8 began, which has now ended. This signifies that the first Release Candidate (RC) development version is ready for early supporters, distro maintainers and users on the cutting edge.
According to Linus Torvalds, Linux kernel 6.8 appears to be a minor release mainly offering driver updates for graphics and networking. It also includes filesystem updates, primarily for bcachefs, XFS, Btrfs, and VFS, along with architectural updates.
“The merge window wasn’t the most amicable, but most of the dissatisfaction wasn’t connected to the code base, but rather was due to harsh weather conditions. Only a few minor technical glitches were encountered. After the hefty 6.7 release, 6.8 seems to be smaller than average, but not by any significant margin,” Linus Torvalds stated.</p
The final release of Linux kernel 6.8 is anticipated to be available in late April 2023, either on March 10th or March 17th. The exact date will be determined by the number of Release Candidate (RC) milestones released by that time.
The availability of Linux 6.8 on March 10th or March 17th will be contingent on whether Linus Torvalds announces seven or eight Release Candidates, respectively.
In the meantime, the first Linux kernel 6.8 Release Candidate has been released for testing on your personal computer. It can be accessed for download from Linus Torvalds’ Git tree or the kernel.org website. This version is a pre-release, so it is important to note, do not install or use it on a production machine!
